Can digital audio sound detailed, smooth and very musical without adding any harshness, just like an analog source? This was the question we had in mind when designing the PAD-2, which has now reached the second generation (Mk2). We strove to achieve this goal, and we used the best solutions for the task. A completely passive analog input stage, based on state-of-the-art custom wound extended bandwidth transformers, to allow for natural anti-aliasing action, for incredible flexibility and musicality. High-precision 512x fs isolated temperature compensated crystal oscillators (“TCXOs”) for ultra stable clock generation, extremely low phase noise and jitter, the 24-bit native PCM4222 A-D conversion chip, can operate up to 192 kHz PCM and 5.6448MHz DSD sample rates, featuring an improved overload handling and smooth clipping, it is really able to capture the finest details and give to recordings that transparent sound, 'true to the source'.

Twelve independent linear power-supply stages for each analog and digital section, 3 separate main transformers, will ensure digital clarity and noise free operation. The sound from highs through to lows is rich and pleasing, full of nuances and details, the low frequency response is amazingly smooth, tight and articulated, no distorion or compression, naturally balanced stereo image, and thanks to the totally passive analog front-end, this unit is able to reach an incredibly low noise level, for an extremely wide dynamic range, and a real and accurate reproduction of the transients. A sound that is difficult to put into words.

The analog input stages are kept balanced from the input connectors throughout to the converter chip. Output formats are AES/EBU in single wire technique, optional Toslink/Optical, for a direct connection to digital peripherals. Additional AES3 digital output and auxiliary WCK clock output, DSD64 and DSD128 outputs in SDIF-3 protocol, are available upon request.
